Enlighten Festival 2020

Every year Canberra has a week-long festival celebrating the founding of Canberra in 1913. Part of the festival is Enlighten, when buildings are lit up by projected images, and sculptures with lights are found in places around the city. You can find images of past Enlightens on the blog. In the opinion of this small bear the buildings were not as interesting this year, with the exception of Questacon where imaged animals and insects moved over two walls. I particularly liked the big koala meeting the butterfly; it is in the last image but a bit hard to see because of the windows. The National Library, which was very colourful in past years, was a bit of a disappointment as they showed mostly archival black and white images. Two buildings that I couldn't get photos of are the heritage-listed Sydney and Melbourne buildings. They were very colourful but hard to photograph while driving; the fine for using a camera while driving is also a big deterrent. The best things this year are the giant insect sculptures in the Canberra Centre, there until March 25. There are a Swallowtail Butterfly, a Cuckoo Bee and a Cicada. Each one has hundreds of coloured lights and movement-activated sound. They are beautiful, even to Mum who has a very low opinion of insects. If these "Mini Beasts" visit a place near you, do make time to go see them.
